The University of Ibadan will celebrate 60 years of its Nursing Programme next week, marking six decades of leadership and innovation in nursing education across Nigeria and West Africa.
The anniversary, scheduled for 13–19 October 2025, will feature academic lectures, exhibitions, health outreaches and an award dinner honouring alumni and faculty members.
Established in 1965 as the first university-based nursing programme in sub-Saharan Africa, the initiative shifted nursing education from hospital-based training to an academic and research-driven model, setting new standards for the profession.
Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Professor Prisca Adejumo, described the milestone as a celebration of “vision, resilience and transformation,” adding that the programme has made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare system through research and community engagement.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, said the University remains proud of the programme’s impact, noting that it has produced nurses who are “visionary leaders transforming healthcare in Africa and beyond.”
Chair of the anniversary planning committee, Dr Adeyinka Ishola, said the event will also chart a course for the future of nursing through new initiatives in digital health, simulation training and advanced postgraduate programmes.
