UK Medical Council Approves Nile University’s MBBS Degree for Medical Practice

Nile University of Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone as the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom has officially recognised its MBBS degree. This means that medical graduates from Nile University can now apply for the GMC’s Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test and, if successful, register to practice medicine in the UK without needing to go through individual qualification reviews.

In an official communication, the GMC confirmed that Nile University’s medical qualification currently meets its standards for international medical graduates. This development streamlines the path for Nile’s graduates to begin medical careers in the UK, removing the usual hurdles many international doctors face.

The GMC is the UK’s leading medical regulator, responsible for maintaining standards across the medical profession and ensuring patient safety. This recognition is a clear sign of confidence in the quality of education provided by Nile University’s College of Health Sciences. Notably, Nile University’s medical school has also been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDMS), a global reference database used by accreditation bodies worldwide.

This listing enables Nile’s medical graduates to apply for certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the United States—an essential step for those seeking to pursue postgraduate training or obtain medical licensure in the U.S.

Furthermore, medical degrees from Nile University are now recognised by medical authorities in Canada, opening even more international doors for its graduates.

Professor Dilli Dogo, Vice-Chancellor of Nile University, described these recognitions as a defining moment for the university. He stated that they confirm the institution’s dedication to international standards in healthcare education and offer graduates the opportunity to contribute to healthcare systems worldwide.

These accomplishments position Nile University as a top-tier institution committed to training future medical professionals who can compete and thrive globally. Founded in 2009 in Abuja, Nile University of Nigeria is a private university offering a wide range of academic programmes across eight faculties. It is a member of Honoris United Universities, the first and largest pan-African private higher education network. Honoris brings together 16 institutions across 10 countries, focused on equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to make a lasting impact worldwide.
