The United Kingdom has expressed its support for the review of the university curriculum to ensure it captures skills that promote entrepreneurship and innovation in students.
This was made known on Monday in Abuja at a one-day workshop on the review of entrepreneurship education in Nigerian universities. The workshop was put together by the National Universities Commission, in collaboration with the UK government. Speaking at the event, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, described the review as timely, saying it would go a long way in closing the graduate‑employer skills gap in the country.
He said, “The UK government welcomes the new curriculum review process, which is timely and provides an opportunity to embed 21st‑century skills and ensure that graduates are globally relevant. The UK’s engagement in higher education in Nigeria is expanding, and we are pleased to support NUC and the Committee of Vice‑Chancellors of Nigerian Universities in this important initiative.” The Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, said the review was necessary because the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard documents currently in use were no longer relevant.
