The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has promised to resolve the ongoing crisis in the school’s Department of Dentistry before she leaves office. Speaking at a press briefing in Calabar, she explained that the issue started years before she became Vice-Chancellor and was caused by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) refusing to induct the 2016 set of Dentistry students due to over-admission.
Prof. Obi denied online rumours that the department had lost its accreditation, stating that the programme is still fully approved and that no student had been asked to transfer or “go learn a trade.”
She stated that the university achieved full clinical accreditation in 2022 and is collaborating closely with the Minister of Education and TETFund to enhance its facilities. She urged the affected students to remain calm, assuring them that the university is doing everything to help them graduate and become licensed dentists.
