UNILAG Appoints Dr Akinyode-Afolabi as Acting Director of Safeguarding Centre

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has appointed Dr. Abiola Akinyode-Afolabi of the Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, as the Acting Director of its Safeguarding Centre.

Her one-year tenure begins on Friday, May 2, 2025, and will run through Friday, May 1, 2026.

As Acting Director, Dr. Akinyode-Afolabi is expected to uphold the mandate of the Safeguarding Centre, which focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment for staff, students, and visitors on campus.

The Centre was established in May 2023 to prevent abuse and protect vulnerable groups within the university community. Its first director was Professor Mopelola Olusakin, a Professor of Counselling Psychology from the Faculty of Education.

Dr. Akinyode-Afolabi brings nearly 30 years of experience in human rights advocacy, gender equality, and social justice. She is also the founding director of the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), an organisation that provides legal support to victims of violence.

Her appointment is a continuation of the University’s commitment to safeguarding. She has served on various national and international platforms, including her recent nomination to the United Nations Spotlight Initiative Global Reference Group.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) community, congratulated Dr. Akinyode-Afolabi and wished her a successful tenure.
