The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba, is set to deepen medical training for its students through a planned partnership with Lakeshore Cancer Centre.
At a meeting held on Friday, May 16, 2025, in Idi-Araba, representatives from both institutions discussed how medical students can initiate clinical rotations in Oncology at Lakeshore to enhance their exposure to cancer care.
Leading the Lakeshore team, Professor Chumy Nwogu, the CEO, emphasised the need for practical cancer training for students, stating that the centre is ready to support this need.
The Head of Medical Oncology at Lakeshore, Dr Chinenye Iwuji, said early exposure to oncology would help close gaps in cancer care expertise.
The Provost of CMUL, Professor Ademola Oremosu, welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a step forward for medical education.
“Collaborations like this elevate medical education and ultimately improve patient care,” he said.
Moreover, the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Professor Vincent O. Osunkalu, expressed strong support for the initiative and stated that CMUL is ready to take full advantage of the opportunity.
Both institutions agreed to work out the operational details in the coming weeks, including student selection, supervision, and curriculum plans.
When finalised, the partnership will allow CMUL students to gain hands-on experience in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, seen as a key move in addressing Nigeria’s rising cancer burden.
