The Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), will mark its 60th anniversary in October with a series of academic, cultural, and social events, alongside the launch of a ₦500 million endowment fund to support indigent students.
The week-long anniversary, themed “Humanities as the Tech Solution to Global Crisis in 21st Century Africa,” will run from Sunday, October 19, to Saturday, October 25, 2025. A gala night and award dinner is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, at the Protea by Marriott Select Hotel Conference Hall, Ikeja, Lagos.
Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Francis Shonubi, said the anniversary theme highlights the role of the humanities in tackling pressing challenges, including governance, climate change, artificial intelligence, migration, and education.
According to him, the faculty, popularly called “The Home of Letters,” will use the endowment fund to provide scholarships for students with special needs, finance research and learning innovations, sponsor alternative solar power solutions under the “Light Up Arts Complex” project, and drive other faculty development goals.
Shonubi urged alumni, corporate organisations, and the public to support the initiative, stressing that their contributions would sustain the faculty’s legacy and expand opportunities for future generations.
