The University of Ilorin Sports Unit has emerged as one of the most outstanding in Nigeria, with a consistent track record of excellence across diverse sporting events. Director of Sports, Prof. Tajudeen Olarewaju Ibraheem, made this known on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, during an appearance on UNILORIN FM’s Yoruba current affairs programme “Oro to n lo” hosted by Mr. Idris Alooma.
Prof. Ibraheem attributed the Unit’s success to professional coaching, cutting-edge facilities, and a performance-driven culture. Unilorin athletes are currently competing in the World University Games in Germany, and the Unit has clinched multiple medals at national, continental, and global levels.
Highlighting recent feats in football, basketball, handball, javelin, squash, and more, he noted that the Unit had consistently excelled at the Nigeria University Games (NUGA) and the West Africa University Games (WAUG). Despite funding limitations, standout athlete Aina Kayode Precious is flying the University’s flag in Germany, thanks to internal sponsorship.
He acknowledged the administration of Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, for investing ₦19 million in new equipment and urged private sector partnerships to fund a swimming pool project. Prof. Ibraheem also revealed collaboration with the Department of Human Kinetics Education to offer diplomas and Ph.D programmes, noting the commercial potential in developing and exporting sports talent.
Citing goalkeeper Surajudeen Ayeleso’s Federation Cup success with Kwara United, Prof. Ibraheem affirmed the Unit’s role in nurturing professional athletes and enhancing the University’s national reputation in sports.
