University of Utah Biochemist Formulates Anti-HIV Drug, FDA Approves

A research team, led by Wesley Sundquist, Professor and Chair of the University of Utah Biochemistry Department, has developed a drug for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) prevention.

Clinical trials have shown that the drug lenacapavir reduces the sexual transmission of HIV with two injections a year. The Food and Drug Administration FDA) has approved the drug. Hence, it will be available in the United States. The approval followed a Phase 3 trial data that showed 99.9% of the 2,179 patients who received the injection twice a year are now HIV negative.
