The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has vowed to flush out unqualified teachers from classrooms across the country, warning that mediocrity will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria’s teaching profession.
Alausa gave the warning in Abuja on Friday during the inauguration of the 5th Governing Council of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). He said the council’s task is not ceremonial but a serious call to “rescue” the sector from unqualified hands.
“This is not business as usual,” the minister declared. “Every Nigerian child deserves a certified professional, no exceptions. You must eliminate unqualified teachers from our classrooms and revoke the licenses of those who tarnish the dignity of this profession.” Alausa stressed that the ministry will monitor the council’s performance with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), warning that failure to deliver would not be condoned.
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for prioritising education. He urged the council to restore respect for teachers, taking inspiration from countries like Finland, where educators are highly regarded. “No education system can rise above the quality of its teachers. We want to build a system where teachers are celebrated as nation builders, not just knowledge facilitators,” Alausa said.
The minister called on parents, communities, and teachers nationwide to hold the council accountable, promising that the Federal Government will stand firm to ensure every classroom is manned by a qualified, TRCN-certified professional.
