Yobe State, which has long been affected by insurgency and underdevelopment, is now witnessing a notable turnaround in its education sector under Governor Mai Mala Buni. The administration has made education a key pillar of recovery, committing substantial resources to improve schools, train teachers, and introduce innovative learning programmes.
A central initiative is the Recovery Through Education and Scholarships (RETES) framework. A key component of RETES is the Buni Foreign Scholarships Scheme (BFSS), which has, since its inception, sent hundreds of Yobe State students to prestigious international universities to pursue studies in fields like medicine, engineering, and technology.
Thousands more students at home are benefiting from his domestic scholarships and other programmes designed to equip them with advanced skills. This investment is targeted to address the state’s skilled manpower shortage, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and engineering. It is viewed as crucial for Yobe’s long-term socio-economic growth.
Over N2 billion was invested in learning materials and infrastructure development in 2024. However, many challenges persist. Underdevelopment in primary education remains a central challenge, with a high number of out-of-school children and inadequate resources in many existing schools, despite recent infrastructure improvements and the distribution of new learning materials. In a move to combat this issue, the state government is now actively seeking public-private partnerships to expand educational opportunities and resources.
