The Ibara Correctional Centre, Abeokuta, awarded 32 male and six female inmates with Bachelor’s Degrees in Theology and Diplomas in Mission on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
In a keynote address by Prof. Olusola Kehinde, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), read by Prof. Fafiolu Olusesan, Kehinde highlighted the role of education as a tool for reformation. Across the world, correctional facilities are overflowing with individuals burdened by crime and lost opportunities. However, education offers a path to dignity, purpose, and a future beyond bars.
Abioye Adesina, the Ogun State Controller of Corrections, representing Sylvester Nwakuche, the Controller General of Corrections, applauded the graduates for their determination despite their positions. Adesina,, stated, “To our graduating inmates—or rather, our scholars in correction—you have chosen growth over despair, discipline over distraction, and purpose over regret. This certificate is not just a piece of paper; it is proof that change is possible and that correctional facilities can become centres of progress.”
Charles Ohiku, the Provost of the West African College for Christian Missions, represented by Prof. Olarenwaju Oluwasanu, the Registrar General, congratulated the graduates on their success. He added that their patience shows obedience to divine calling. The graduation shows that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is committed to rehabilitation through education.
