The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has released the names of 57 lawyers who have been approved for elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday after the committee’s 169th plenary session. He noted that the SAN title is conferred on legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction in court advocacy or made remarkable contributions to the field of legal scholarship. Akanbi stressed that all shortlisted candidates must attend a mandatory pre-swearing-in induction programme before their formal conferment.
In a rare directive, the LPPC warned nominees against publishing congratulatory messages or adverts regarding their elevation. “Any breach of this directive may attract sanctions as provided in Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023,” the statement read. The swearing-in ceremony for the new SANs is scheduled for September 29, 2025.
Prominent names on the list include Theophilus Kolawole Esan, Ernest Chikwendu Ikeji, Omamuzo Erebe, Emeka Akabogu, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, and Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu, the sole academic selected this year. The LPPC’s announcement continues the tradition of recognising legal excellence, with the SAN rank remaining the highest mark of distinction in Nigeria’s legal profession.
