Abandoned Buildings, Wasted Properties, Litter FCE Osiele

The Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, Abeokuta, in Ogun State, is facing severe neglect, as many buildings and properties have been abandoned and are left to decay on the school campus. The disturbing state of infrastructure decay and neglect was revealed in a recent news report. Some of the properties have been left unattended for at least three years.

A look around the college reveals several buildings that are either uncompleted or completely abandoned. One large structure stands out—its windows broken, walls covered with weeds, and its surroundings filled with hundreds of rusting chairs and broken furniture. Students said the site has now become a symbol of waste and poor management.

Inside one of the buildings, cracked walls, scattered chairs, and a strong stench of decay showed the extent of neglect. Many of the wooden and plastic chairs that could have been useful in lecture halls were lying damaged and exposed to rain. According to some students, this is happening at a time when classrooms remain overcrowded and poorly ventilated.

A student from the Department of Arts Education lamented: “It is heartbreaking to see this. We sit on the floor in some classes, yet we have so many chairs wasting here.” Another science student revealed that the properties had been in the same state since she resumed in 2021, with no visible effort at renovation.

Beyond the issue of comfort, students raised concerns about safety. For example, they lament that the abandoned site has now become a hiding place for rodents and reptiles, while the scattered materials pose a danger to those passing by. Some final-year students also complained that the neglect reflects poorly on the college. “We are supposed to be trained as teachers, but the environment does not support learning,” one student said.

The situation reflects not only poor funding but also a lack of maintenance culture. Rain and termites have destroyed parts of the furniture, while vandals have turned the deserted buildings into playgrounds, leaving graffiti and broken fittings everywhere.

Student representatives stated that they have written to management several times, but no tangible action has been taken. Many believe urgent intervention from both school authorities and the government is needed before the facilities become entirely useless.

For now, students continue to carry chairs from one hall to another, or even stand during lectures, while hundreds of abandoned chairs waste away nearby. Their appeal is simple: FCE Osiele deserves better.
