Students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife peacefully protested on Monday, demanding that the university issue them their identity cards.
They gathered at the main gate, chanting that the examinations should not proceed without students having their ID cards.
Issac Omoboriowo, President of the Great Ife Students’ Union, told reporters that for the past six years, students have only received ID cards once, despite paying for them annually along with their school fees.
He said the students are standing firm on their demand, warning, “No ID card, no examination.”
Another student, Jimoh Oladipupo, described the failure to provide ID cards as a serious issue and accused the university management of fraud.
Some students also complained about poor living conditions on campus, including overgrown hostels infested with wild animals, a lack of water, and overcrowding.
Many are forced to live off campus, which is inconvenient for their families.
The protesters called on the university to urgently produce ID cards and improve facilities, such as lecture theatres.
They also appealed to the federal government to increase funding for education.
The university’s Public Relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the management is working to address these concerns.
