The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the subject combinations for the 2026 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Under the new arrangement, only students in the Business or Commercial track will be allowed to take Economics. Science and Humanities students, including those studying Literature, History, or Government, are now barred from selecting the subject.
WAEC requires candidates to register for a minimum of seven and a maximum of nine subjects, with English Language, Mathematics, and Civic Education compulsory for all students, regardless of their area of study.
For science students, the recommended subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, and Agricultural Science, alongside the compulsory core subjects. Electives such as Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, or a Nigerian language are also available.
Art students will study Literature in English, Government or History, Religious Studies, and a Nigerian language, in addition to the compulsory subjects. Other electives, including Arabic Studies, French, or Agricultural Science, are optional.
Commercial students are expected to take Economics, Accounting, Commerce, and Office Practice, along with English Language, Mathematics, and Civic Education. Electives such as Further Mathematics and languages are also permitted.
WAEC has also retained 35 trade subjects, designed to equip students with practical and entrepreneurial skills. Candidates must choose at least one trade subject alongside their academic subjects.
