Education is essential for the growth of any country, and in Nigeria, some states are doing better than others. A recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics and UNICEF indicates that Imo, Lagos, and Ekiti are the most educated states in Nigeria as of 2025. According to the report, Imo State ranks first. The southeast state has a very high literacy rate of 96.4%. This outcome implies that almost everyone in the state can read and write. Additionally, the state has one of the lowest rates of children not attending school, indicating that the people in Imo take education seriously.
Lagos State follows closely with a literacy rate of 96.3%. Although many children still drop out of school in Lagos due to its large population, the state has numerous universities, colleges, and polytechnics to support young people in their learning and development.
Moreover, Ekiti State, known as the “Fountain of Knowledge,” ranked third with a score of 95.7%. The southwestern state, which proclaims itself as having the highest number of PhD holders, has a robust culture of learning, and many families see education as the key to success. Other states doing well in education include Rivers, Abia, Anambra, Osun, Edo, Enugu, and Delta. These states have many schools and continue to invest in their children’s future.
However, not every state is doing well. Kano, Nasarawa, and Plateau are among the lowest, with many children still out of school and poor reading levels. This report demonstrates that when a state invests energy and resources in education, the people benefit. More states need to follow this path so that no Nigerian child is left behind.
