The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has denied claims that it owes any staff salaries, saying those alleging they are being owed for 12 months were disengaged over a year ago due to irregularities in their appointments.
A group of former staff, under the name “2023 Employment Set,” addressed journalists in Umuahia on Saturday, stating that they had not received any salary since June 2023. They also said they had not been issued formal disengagement letters. Appealing to Governor Alex Otti, the group urged him to look into their case, describing themselves as “his children.”
However, the university, in a statement signed by its Registrar, Acho Elendu, said that staff salaries have been paid regularly since Governor Otti took office on May 29, 2023. Elendu described the allegations as an attempt to blackmail both the university and the state government.
He explained that those making the claims were hired under questionable conditions in 2023 and were disengaged more than a year ago. The statement added that Governor Otti had approved the payment of 11 months’ salary arrears left unpaid by the previous administration, with 10 of those months already settled. The university also noted that the ongoing recruitment process, approved by the state government, is open to all qualified candidates—including those who were previously disengaged from the university.
