Students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have planted more than 2,000 trees to support the environment. This happened under a special programme called the UNICEF Green Rising Project. The tree planting took place on a large piece of land behind the university dam in Tudun Sarki.
The exercise was done in two parts. The first event took place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, during which over 1,000 trees were planted. Even the school’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, came to support the students. The second part took place on Tuesday, June 24, and again, more than 1,000 trees were planted.
The Green Rising Project is a programme led by university students and supported by UNICEF, which teaches students how to care for the environment through activities such as planting trees, recycling plastic and nylon, and attending training sessions.
Before the planting started, the students were trained on what to do during a workshop held on March 1, 2025.
On the final day of planting, Professor Sahalu B. Junaidu, the Dean of Student Affairs, instructed the students to follow all the instructions so that the trees could grow well. He said the students were the main heroes of the project and that the school would help take care of the trees as time goes on. Mr. Usman Shehu Lawal from the Student Affairs office also thanked the students and said UNICEF would continue to support them with gifts and motivation.
Many students were excited. Baraka Abdullahi from the Chemistry Department said this was her first time planting a tree, and it was an experience she would never forget. Zulaiha Muhammed from the Biological Sciences department said that having more trees means we will have fresher air. Yahaya Ashafa and Rabiat Saidu also stated that the project brought them happiness. The event concluded in a fun way, with traditional drummers entertaining the crowd.
