Students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have launched a series of self-funded projects to tackle long-standing infrastructure and welfare challenges on campus.
Led by the 2024/2025 Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the initiatives include the construction of a public toilet near the university’s Sickbay, the renovation of the SRC Secretariat, and the installation of first aid boxes across 18 faculties.
The council also trained 150 students in basic life support — a first-of-its-kind effort at the university — aimed at improving emergency response during campus medical incidents.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed, represented by his deputy Professor Bello Sabo, commissioned the facilities, describing them as a model of student-led development.
SRC President Comrade Ibrahim Nazeer Kallah said the projects were conceived to address gaps in sanitation and health services. “We realised many daily challenges students face could be solved with low-cost, practical interventions,” he said.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Sahalu Junaidu, said the approach reflected growing student participation in campus management.
