A leading accounting expert has called on Nigerian universities to overhaul accounting education to produce graduates equipped for modern business challenges.
Professor Olusegun Vincent of Pan-Atlantic University and Lagos Business School urged educators to train accountants as strategic business partners who can leverage data for decision-making. He spoke during the maiden public lecture of the ICAN Professorial Chair in Accounting at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Vincent highlighted a persistent gap between academic teaching and industry needs, calling for curricula that reflect advances in financial reporting, auditing, corporate finance, and technology. He recommended incorporating professional accountants into faculties, expanding internships with firms and tech companies, and integrating industry advisory boards to guide teaching.
“Accounting stands at the crossroads of traditional practice and digital transformation. Technical knowledge must be paired with ethical judgment and technological literacy,” he said.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola said the lecture was timely, given the rapid technological and business changes affecting the profession. Panellists, including KPMG’s Dr Chibuzor Anyanechi and Ruta Exploration’s Aderonke Ajiroba, urged students to embrace discipline, practical skills, and emerging technologies to remain competitive.
