The Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament, often celebrated for its thrill, has become a powerful tool for social transformation in rural parts of Nigeria.
Beyond the glamour of the sport lies a platform capable of mobilising resources, driving awareness, and inspiring goodwill for causes that matter. Since its inception, the tournament has channelled the appeal of polo into life-changing projects for vulnerable children in Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State. Among its significant achievements is the completion of a 60-classroom, fully equipped school complex in Maraban Jos, where over 20,000 children are now enrolled. With new uniforms and shoes already distributed, plans are in motion to add 100 more classrooms.
The impact of the programme launched in 2003 reaches far beyond education. Through sustainable rural development projects, such as clean water facilities and cooperative societies for farmers and artisans, the initiative has improved living standards in six communities across three local government areas. Electricity, job opportunities, and better infrastructure are now a reality for thousands. The Charity Shield shifted focus in 2006 to UNICEF’s work with orphans and vulnerable children. A turning point came in 2008 when Access Bank committed to a multi-year sponsorship, setting new standards for corporate philanthropy.
The 2025 edition wrapped up at Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Resort with victories for Clearwater, Access Bank, and Katsina Max Air. Among the dignitaries present was Senegalese NBA legend Ahmadou Gallo Fall, who praised the Bank’s investment in grassroots sports.
