A chemistry expert, Dr Oluwafunmilola Akinpelu, has called on the Nigerian government to update science education by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and new technologies into school curricula. Speaking from South Africa, where she is researching robotic chemistry, Akinpelu said Nigeria risks falling behind if schools do not teach students how to use AI in solving real-life problems. She believes Artificial Intelligence can be instrumental in helping Nigeria discover cheaper drugs, protect the environment, and boost local industries.
Dr Akinpelu, a well-known lecturer at the prestigious University of Ibadan, also noted that combining African traditional knowledge with new technology could help create solutions that meet local needs. The chemistry expert urged the government at all levels, as well as schools, to invest in smart labs, modern teaching materials, and teamwork between science and tech departments. With these changes, she believes Nigeria could become a leader in green chemistry and digital innovation in Africa. “Science must grow to meet today’s challenges,” she added.
