The American University of Nigeria (AUN) is embracing technology to transform academic research, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for knowledge creation.
The University’s Learning and Teaching Centre (LTC), led by Associate Professor Agatha Ukata, recently organised an e-resources tour at AUN’s e-Learning Centre. The event brought together faculty, staff, and students to explore how digital platforms and AI are reshaping research practices.
Mr Omachi Okolo, Assistant Director of Information and Digital Literacy, led the session, demonstrating how digital libraries, institutional repositories, and global databases can deepen scholarly engagement. He introduced AI-powered tools, including ProQuest, Answerthis, NotebookLM, and StormGenie, showing participants how to generate research questions, organise ideas, and identify new topics for study.
He also highlighted practical guidance on reference management and access to e-books, newspapers, and magazines through platforms such as OverDrive and PressReader. Mr Okolo stressed that AI should complement—not replace—human reasoning, emphasising ethical principles, factual accuracy, and rigorous evaluation as essential safeguards for academic integrity.
Acknowledging some institutional hesitation toward AI, he noted its growing inevitability, citing global adoption across various industries. “It has come to stay,” he said, highlighting its potential to enhance research while extending human capacity.
The initiative positions AUN at the forefront of integrating technology and AI into higher education in Nigeria.
