Amnesty International has condemned the University of Ibadan (UI) for suspending three students who protested against an increase in school fees in 2024. The human rights group stated that the punishment was too harsh and unfair. They also said it was wrong to punish the students for speaking up.
The suspended students are Ayodele Aduwo, Nice Linus, and Mide Gbadegesin. Amnesty is calling for their immediate reinstatement.
In a statement released on Monday, Amnesty accused the university, under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale, of unjustly targeting the students. The group stated that the students have faced nearly a year of disciplinary hearings solely for speaking out during Nigeria’s harsh economic period. Amnesty urged the university to stop all unfair actions against the students and respect their rights. The organisation stated that peaceful protests should not be punished, especially during times of economic hardship.
