The Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (ARD-UITH) has decried the poor payment of its members.
The association mentioned that some members are unable to pay their children’s school fees or maintain their cars.
Speaking at a news conference during the association’s 42nd Annual General Meeting and Sir Ademola Aderibigbe Scientific Conference, Dr Monsuru Awodun, the president, disclosed that doctors are poorly paid in Nigeria, unlike their colleagues in other African and European countries.
The president highlighted the shortage of manpower at UITH and other institutions, which is also due to the relocation of personnel abroad.
He said, “The rate at which our members are leaving is unprecedented and should be a source of national concern.”
Awodun highlighted that the doctors experience severe fatigue and burnout, which makes them prone to errors and less healthy.
He then called for call hours that protect doctors and their patients.
