The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic (NUBA), Zaria Chapter, has expressed concern over the low salaries earned by lecturers in the institution, as the union continues its strike. The group alleged that the institution’s educational welfare is at risk as the lecturers are paid way less than the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
Malam Usman-Shehu Suleiman, the ASUP Chairman, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Suleiman, representing the Joint Action Committee of the staff union at the university, disclosed that an assistant lecturer’s net pay is ₦64,400, which he described as far below expectations compared to the monthly allowance for NYSC members. This, among other reasons, led the institutions to experience a drastic brain drain, and many lecturers are on the verge of leaving the institution.
