The Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Friday, November 21, 2025, after accusing the Federal Government of failing to address long-standing grievances. The action follows the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued last month.
ASUU Chairman, Prof Chris Piwuna, said after an emergency NEC meeting in Abuja that the union had “exhausted every window of patience,” citing the government’s “bad faith” in resolving issues raised. The strike is expected to shut down public universities nationwide, including FUTO, IMSU, AIFUE, UAES and KOMU in Imo State.
Core issues highlighted include unpaid strike salaries for the 2022 three-and-a-half-month strike, the lack of a salary review since 2009 despite rising inflation, rejection of a proposed 35 per cent increment, and the stalled implementation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement.
Zonal coordinators have already instructed members to withdraw from teaching, supervision and statutory duties. Several zones, including Owerri, Benin, Kano and Port Harcourt, have confirmed full compliance.
Government officials, however, appealed for more time. Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said a supplementary budget to clear arrears would be submitted to the National Assembly “within days.” At the same time, the Minister of Labour has called for an emergency conciliation meeting.
