Prof Chris Piwuna, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has accused the Federal Government of failing to prioritise education, citing officials’ lack of collective responsibility for the sector’s challenges.
Speaking in an Interview, Piwuna argued that key ministers treat education as the Minister of Education’s problem alone, undermining sustainable reforms.
He highlighted longstanding issues that have prompted ASUU strikes, including unpaid promotion arrears, withheld deductions, and inadequate funding and infrastructure for public universities. Piwuna also criticised proposals to redirect TETFund resources to private institutions, describing such moves as symptomatic of self-interest and corruption.
Echoing similar concerns, panellists during the interview noted systemic problems in Nigeria’s universities, including poor leadership, infrastructural decay and weak accountability.
Piwuna stressed that recognising education as a public good is essential for national development and economic growth, warning that continued indifference threatens the country’s intellectual and institutional capacity.
