The Academic Staff Union of Universities has issued a fresh warning that it may shut down public universities nationwide if ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government fail within its one-month ultimatum.
ASUU Kano Zonal Coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, delivered the warning in Kano after the zone’s meeting.
He said the union suspended its October warning strike in good faith, expecting the government to address issues tied to welfare and learning conditions. Instead, he accused government negotiators of dragging their feet and undermining efforts to finalise key agreements.
Representatives from ABU Zaria, BUK, KASU, ADUSTECH, FUD, NWU, and SLUK participated in the meeting, which reviewed the report from ASUU’s NEC session held on Nov. 8 and 9 at Taraba State University. Muhammad said NEC was dissatisfied with the slow pace of renegotiation, describing it as a significant bottleneck.
He noted that the government had shown little willingness to improve lecturers’ conditions or tackle the factors driving brain drain. “What the government has offered will neither improve the working conditions of academics nor attract scholars,” he said.
Muhammad also criticised state governors for establishing new universities without adequate funding and urged the Federal Government to place a moratorium similar to that imposed on federal universities.
