The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State has accused the institution’s management of neglecting staff welfare. It warns that conditions have become “unbearable and life-threatening.”
Addressing journalists recently, ASUU-SAZU Chairman Dr Awwal Hussain said the union was raising fresh concerns after months of alleged administrative inaction, despite interventions by Governor Bala Mohammed. He said 30 PhD holders had resigned due to poor working conditions and claimed the university had failed to settle salary arrears and fully implement pension schemes, despite increased government funding.
Hussain highlighted that a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the union and management in 2020 — which mandated clearing all claims within 12 months — remains largely unfulfilled. He also accused the administration of withholding salaries, ignoring official correspondence, and failing to address staff training, retention, and allowance payments. Families of deceased staff, he added, are still awaiting entitlements.
The union rated the MoU’s implementation at just 30% and warned that it had begun internal preparations to resume a previously suspended strike if the issues were not resolved.
Attempts to obtain a response from the university were unsuccessful, with spokesperson Auwal Hassan not responding to enquiries as of press time.
