ATBU to Host New Nuclear Research Centre

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) is partnering with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, to establish a Nuclear Research Centre aimed at advancing studies in smart agriculture, medicine, energy, and technology.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Garba, announced the plan at the opening of a two-day workshop on implementing the National Research Fund (NRF) Grant towards commercialisation. He said the collaboration would also pave the way for undergraduate degree programmes in Nuclear Science and Engineering, with the National Universities Commission (NUC) already developing curriculum benchmarks for the courses.

Professor Garba explained that ATBU is leveraging its partnership with the Bank of Industry to fund start-ups and commercialise research outputs through an Innovation Park set up by the bank on campus. “Developed nations invest heavily in research and development — Nigeria must do the same to drive sustainable growth,” he said.

Acting Director of Research, Dr Isah Mohammed, noted that the training seeks to help researchers move from theory to market-ready innovations. He said ATBU had already developed several IT-based security solutions and urged academics to focus on projects that address real community needs.
