Bells University of Technology, Ota, has won first place in the University Duel Smart Challenge 2025—a national innovation contest organised by STEMafrica. The competition brought together students from 16 top universities in Nigeria to develop innovative solutions to major national challenges.
Three students from Bells University represented the institution: Kafayat Lawal, Iregbeyanose Itua, and Shalom Oso. They impressed the judges with their project called Fermwise—an innovative farming system made to help reduce food shortages in Nigeria using modern technology.
Fermwise combines a web app with smart farming tools. It provides farmers with practical advice using artificial intelligence (AI), offers weather updates, helps track daily tasks, and provides an online market for selling farm produce. It also utilises specialised sensors to monitor soil and crops in real-time. This helps farmers make better choices and grow more food.
In the final stage of the highly competitive competition, Bells University faced two impressive opponents: Veritas University and the University of Lagos (UNILAG). All three finalists presented their best ideas on how to tackle Nigeria’s acute food crisis.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeremiah Ojediran, congratulated the team and stated that their win demonstrates Bells University’s commitment to producing students who can think critically, solve real-life problems, and contribute to Nigeria’s development.
