The Vice-Chancellor of Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, Prof Haruna Ayuba, has called on academics to develop practical, home-grown solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
He made the call during the university’s 9th Inaugural Lecture delivered by Prof Michael Akpan, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, titled “Being an Economist – The Homo Economicus.”
Ayuba stressed the need for economists to go beyond theory and provide actionable ideas that address Nigeria’s current economic realities. He noted that human behaviour in economic contexts is often shaped by social and emotional factors, urging scholars to explore these dynamics in their research.
“This lecture should inspire new thinking and discussions that will lead to innovative, home-grown economic solutions,” he said, reassuring his commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and critical thinking within the university.
In his presentation, Akpan commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as bold steps toward long-term stability and private-sector growth.
