CBT SSCE Plan Needs More Preparation

The Federal Government plans to start computer-based Senior School Certificate Examinations (CBT SSCE) next year, but many Nigerians say the country is not yet ready. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said all NECO and WAEC examinations will go fully digital by 2026.

While this move may reduce examination fraud and speed up the process, experts warn that many schools, especially in rural areas, do not have computers, steady electricity, or internet. Some students have never even used a computer before. Education in Nigeria faces many problems, such as poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, and untrained teachers. In the 2025 budget, only about 7% was given to education, far below the 15% recommended by UNESCO.

In some cases, students have taken examinations using candles due to power cuts. Critics say it is unfair to expect all students to pass computer-based examinations without first fixing these issues in schools across the country.
