What was meant to be a joyful signing-out celebration at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, ended in tragedy as a cult clash left at least one student dead and another feared killed.
The violence erupted in Etsako West when suspected members of rival groups, Eiye and Black Axe (Aye), clashed at a nearby hotel during the festivities. One of the people that were on the scene during the conflict said the fight began after a stray bullet hit a Mercedes-Benz belonging to one of the factions, sparking gunfire and panic.
In the midst of the confusion, many people escaped unhurt. However, one student was reportedly shot while another was run over by a fleeing vehicle. Residents described scenes of terror, with students and bystanders fleeing for safety and some taking shelter inside buildings.
Edo State Police spokesman, Moses Yamu, confirmed one death but noted that investigations were ongoing. The incident has raised concerns over rising cult-related violence on campuses, turning what should have been a proud moment for students into a day of mourning.
