Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has partnered with the National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, and the Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) to address gaps in fish production in Nigeria.
Domestic tilapia production struggles to meet demand, partly due to shortages of locally produced feed. The collaboration aims to develop practical solutions, including a pilot tilapia farm on DELSU’s campus using special strains from Taiwan, access to research laboratories, and training for students and staff.
Professor Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, DELSU Vice-Chancellor, stated that the initiative aims to connect research with practical applications. “The goal is to provide communities with sustainable sources of fish while equipping students and local farmers with skills to improve production,” he said.
The partnership also includes joint postgraduate programmes, staff and student exchanges, and participation in international aquaculture forums.
DELSU is pursuing other agricultural projects in conjunction with this initiative, including expanding poultry production and supporting cocoa farming through training and the establishment of model plantations.
For farmers and students in Delta State, these initiatives offer opportunities to adopt modern farming techniques and contribute to local food security, even as the country continues to face challenges in meeting its domestic protein demand.
