Prof Lateef Sanni, former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has urged graduates to “dream big, even if it is from a small place,” during his convocation speech.
Prof Sanni was the convocation speaker for the Class of 2025 at the University of Greenwich, UK, where he was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree. The ceremony took place at Rochester Cathedral. He is the first FUNAAB alumnus to receive this honour from the university. Prof Sanni, currently Executive Director of the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute, has over 30 years of experience in agricultural research. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and 30 books, and mentored over 140 graduate students.
He is known for pioneering work in post-harvest food systems and contributions to food security policy in Nigeria and internationally. His work on cassava value chains through projects such as Cassava Adding Value for Africa (CAVA II) has earned him several awards. The FUNAAB Alumni Association praised his achievements, calling the award a “national pride” and a reminder of the potential of Nigerian scholars when excellence is supported.
