Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, through its Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, recently hosted its inaugural alumni lecture series, honouring a distinguished graduate whose rise from extreme hardship to business success has become a compelling story of resilience and determination.
The event celebrated Dr. Chimaobi Anyaso, a billionaire businessman who once sold mangoes to fund his education while studying English and Literature at the university. The lecture, themed “From Classroom to Boardroom: The Power of Education in Shaping Destiny,” drew a packed auditorium of students, lecturers, alumni, and invited guests.
Anyaso’s journey, marked by poverty, academic struggles, and entrepreneurial hustle—formed the backbone of the lecture. He admitted to being an average student who rarely attended lectures due to his involvement in various business ventures, from street hawking to product marketing. Nevertheless, he leveraged these early experiences to refine his business instincts and lay the groundwork for future success. Delivering a rousing keynote, Anyaso challenged the audience to move beyond academic grades and instead focus on acquiring practical knowledge, building resilience, and solving problems. He argued that education must evolve into a tool for leadership, innovation, and economic empowerment.
Now the Group Chairman of CAADES Group, with interests spanning oil and gas, real estate, construction, and healthcare, Anyaso shared insights on governance, enterprise, and nation-building, emphasising that entrepreneurship is a more reliable training ground for public leadership than political patronage. As part of his contribution to the university, Anyaso announced the construction of a state-of-the-art study hall, valued at ₦250 million, which is expected to be completed within a year.
