The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally recognised the University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Imo State, as the state’s fourth university. Governor Hope Uzodinma, while presenting the approval documents at the NUC headquarters, described the development as a significant step toward expanding access to quality education and building a knowledge-driven economy. He said the new institution aims to equip young people with digital skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship capacity through a partnership and mentorship arrangement with the University of California, Berkeley. Uzodinma noted that the university would serve as a hub for job creation and economic growth by producing graduates capable of becoming employers of labour.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, commended the state’s vision but emphasised that the university must uphold academic standards, promote impactful research, and engage actively with industry and society. He added that the institution should remain student-centred, focusing on practical, innovative programmes that prepare graduates to make meaningful contributions to the economy.
