Joshua Afolayan, doctors allegedly removed his kidney during surgery at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH)
Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) has launched an investigation following claims by a patient, Joshua Afolayan, that doctors allegedly removed a kidney during surgery.
Afolayan, who suffered an accident in August 2025, said pre-surgery scans, including at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, indicated only his right kidney was damaged. He added that he was able to urinate shortly before the operation but has not done so since, prompting a follow-up scan at another facility, which reportedly confirmed he had lost a kidney.
The patient has called on authorities to investigate the alleged malpractice, describing ongoing pain and distress.
In response, the hospital’s Board Chairman, Dr Adedamola Dada, appointed a seven-member independent panel to examine the case. The team is chaired by Prof. Francis Faduyile of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. It includes medical experts, community leaders, and a legal adviser from the Ekiti State Ministry of Health.
A statement by EKSUTH’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Rolake Adewumi, said the panel has ten days to submit its report. She assured the public that the inquiry would be thorough, urging full cooperation from all parties involved to ensure transparency and justice.
