Nigerian researchers are taking centre stage in an ambitious European Union-backed initiative to promote sustainable aquaculture in the Atlantic region. The ASTRAL project, part of the EU Horizon 2020 programme, brings together scientists from ten countries, including Nigeria, Norway, Ireland, and Brazil, to develop environmentally friendly fish farming practices.
At the heart of the effort is the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), tasked with building human capacity in aquaculture and ocean science literacy. For NIOMR scientists, the project offers an opportunity to acquire cutting-edge skills, connect with international experts, and bring innovative approaches to local fisheries.
“Participating in ASTRAL allows us to strengthen our research capabilities while ensuring Nigerian aquaculture benefits from global best practices,” said a senior researcher at NIOMR.
With integrated multi-trophic aquaculture — farming different species together to reduce environmental impact — gaining momentum, ASTRAL’s work promises not only scientific advancements but also practical benefits for local communities that depend on fisheries for food and livelihoods.
