Excel College Denies Misconduct in Viral Video

The management of Excel College, Ejigbo, Lagos, has stated that a viral video alleging misconduct by some of its students combines two separate incidents.

The college’s director, Dr Dele Oke, told journalists over the weekend that the first incident occurred on May 11, 2025, when a parent brought non-alcoholic wine to celebrate her son’s birthday in the hostel. He said the students “just popped the wine and nothing more.”

According to him, the second incident occurred in April 2025, when some students experimented with rolled papers during a holiday extension class. The footage was recorded and later circulated on WhatsApp.

Oke said the management invited the parents of the students involved, barred the students from graduation activities, and sent them home until a week before their NECO examinations. House masters were also issued warning letters and had some of their allowances revoked.

He said the school has since relocated the boys’ hostel for better monitoring and is working with the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth, the police and other agencies.

The chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association, Sir Ndubuisi Udeagu, stated that the management had been transparent with parents and emphasised that such behaviour had not previously occurred in the school.

Other parents, including Victor Anyali, Adewale Ogunlari, and Judith Ekwebelem, described the college as maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct.
