The Lagos State Government has appointed Farouk Mohammed Gumel, an indigene of Jigawa State, as a member of the Lagos State University (LASU) Governing Council.
The appointment, announced in a circular dated October 31, 2025, and signed by the Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro, also named Babatunde Ogala (SAN) as Chairman of the council.
Gumel, Vice-Chairman of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group and Chairman of WACOT Rice Limited, brings extensive experience in agriculture, finance, and governance. He previously chaired the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and currently leads Botswana’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.
A graduate of Newcastle University, Gumel is widely respected for bridging the gap between private enterprise and public policy. His appointment, though uncommon for a non-indigene, aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s agenda to strengthen education in Lagos State.
The new council is tasked with driving academic excellence, transparency, and institutional reform at LASU.
