Babatunde Fashola, Former Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) Foundation, has called on the private sector and Nigerians to fund medical research and health innovations.
Speaking at NIMR’s monthly media chat, Fashola said government allocations are not enough to fund medical research.
He emphasised, “For NIMR to achieve its mandate, the role of the private sector is crucial in mobilising resources to support government funding. The government cannot fund medical research alone.”
According to him, despite Nigeria having the intellectual capacity to deliver top-notch research, it lacks funding.
Highlighting the Institute’s donations and training, he explained that the foundation is expanding into maternal and child health research and plans to support doctoral and postdoctoral projects, fellowships, and additional scientific projects.
According to him, “If Nigeria can commit to stable funding and adopt accounting practices that do not disrupt research, the national research landscape will witness a significant turnaround.”
