Fawehinmi Appointed Vice-Chancellor of UniAbuja

Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, appointed as the substantive VC of UNIABUJA

The University of Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has appointed Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as its substantive Vice-Chancellor. The decision was taken during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the university’s Governing Council on Friday, according to the institution’s acting Head of Information, Dr Habib Yakoob.

Fawehinmi, currently Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, will assume office on February 10 2026, for a non-renewable five-year term. Meanwhile, the tenure of the current Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, has been extended until that date.

A Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology, Fawehinmi brings extensive academic and administrative experience. He has held leadership roles at the University of Port Harcourt, including two terms as Head of Department of Anatomy, Associate Dean, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

He has served on national and international professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association and the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute in the UK.

Fawehinmi’s research has earned national and international grants, and he holds a Federal Government patent for the AMRG Anthropometry Chair, which enables dimensional body measurements. His appointment follows months of acting leadership after controversies surrounding the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi.
