The Federal Ministry of Education has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a free digital skills training programme aimed at equipping Nigerian students and educators with 21st-century tech competencies. The initiative, known as the Amazon Academy Project, was unveiled under the leadership of Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, Minister of Education.
The programme, which focuses on cloud computing, machine learning, and emerging technologies, aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). Dr Alausa described the project as a transformative step toward bridging the country’s digital divide and preparing graduates and lecturers to thrive in the global digital economy.
In its pilot phase, the initiative has already onboarded coordinators from 43 federal universities and polytechnics. It will now be extended to all federal, state, and private tertiary institutions nationwide. Institutions are required to nominate coordinators who will liaise with AWS and the Ministry, identify participants, and oversee the implementation of the programme. To ensure accessibility, the Ministry and AWS will jointly cover certification costs, allowing participants to train and receive globally recognised certifications at no cost. Registration for the next onboarding phase is now open on the Ministry’s website.
