Federal Government Launches Nationwide School Improvement and Teacher Development Programmes

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Federal Ministry of Education have officially launched two major initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of basic education in Nigeria. The programmes, which focus on school improvement and teacher professional development, were inaugurated on April 7, 2025, at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre in Abuja.

These initiatives, the School-Based Management Committee – School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP) and Teacher Professional Development (TPD), will impact over 223,000 teachers and school administrators across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The programmes are part of the Federal Government’s effort to prioritise education under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ to enhance learning environments and promote continuous professional growth for educators.

At the flag-off event, a range of key figures were present, including Honourable Mukhtar Shagaya, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services, and Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education.

Also in attendance were Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of UBEC, and representatives from international development partners, including UNICEF and UNESCO.

The SBMC-SIP programme is set to transform public schools by disbursing ₦2.035 billion to 1,147 schools nationwide.

This funding will enable school management committees to initiate over 15,000 school improvement projects, including renovations, improved access to sanitation facilities, new furniture, and enhanced security measures.

The TPD programme, with an allocation of ₦598 million per state, aims to enhance the professional capacity of educators across the nation.

This effort is one of the most significant teacher training initiatives in Nigeria’s educational history.
