The Federal Government has promised to step up efforts to end child labour in Nigeria. At a children’s conference in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Mohammad Dingyadi, said every child deserves safety, education, and a life free from hard labour. Dingyadi said children should not be made to carry heavy loads or work long hours, but rather be in school, playing and dreaming big. He praised a new report by the ILO and UNICEF, which showed a drop in global child labour cases from 160 million to 138 million. He called on stakeholders like the ILO, NECA, and others to support the fight against child labour. Other speakers, including ILO’s Dr Vanessa Phala and NLC President Joe Ajaero, stressed the need for quick action. They urged the government to pass labour laws that protect children and ensure every Nigerian child has access to free, quality education.
