The Federal Government has intensified negotiations with the academic and non-academic unions to prevent a nationwide shutdown of tertiary institutions.
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, on Sunday, appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) to suspend their planned strikes, assuring them that discussions are ongoing to address their demands.
ASUP had issued a 21-day strike notice on August 14, while SSANIP followed with its own ultimatum on August 27. ASUU held nationwide protests on August 26 and is currently consulting its members before announcing its next steps.
Union leaders confirmed that multiple meetings have been scheduled with government representatives, with outcomes expected to determine the direction of their actions.
Alausa said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to a unified approach in resolving longstanding issues, stressing that the government will not enter into agreements it cannot implement.
He added that Tinubu had mandated him to work toward lasting solutions to prevent recurrent disruptions in the education sector.
